Some have viewed recent Chinese activity in the South China Sea as taking advantage of the world’s preoccupation with the Covid-19 pandemic. This briefing assesses Chinese actions in the region during 2020, comparing them with earlier years to determine whether Chinese activity in recent months is novel. A review of Chinese activity is also undertaken to assess the potential impact on existing disputes in the South China Sea.
