The value of troops who can seize and hold ground, close with and engage the enemy has never gone away despite the transition to mechanized warfare, counter insurgency operations, and return to near peer threats. These have all influenced the development of the latest generations of infantry weapons and as the US looks at a possible calibre change the area is seeing a change that would set a direction in infantry weapons and tactics for the next half century.
