Naval Group Australia (NGA) has launched a series of opportunities worth about AUD100 million (USD77.5 million) to provide “tools, equipment, and manufactured items” in support of the company's programme to construct Attack-class submarines for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).
The company said that the expressions of interest (EOIs) feature the delivery of “around 1,000 different items” that will be used at the new dedicated shipyard at Osborne, Adelaide, which will be the construction site for the boats. The items will include the purchase of both “ready-made and custom manufactured items from suppliers”, said NGA.
The company said the EOIs – released through Australia's Industry Capability Network (ICN) portal – are targeted at Australian suppliers of products including hand and machine tools, welding machines, tanks, sumps, pumps, personal protective equipment, workshop benches, and a plasma cutter.
In October 2020 NGA also released an initial work package worth AUD900 million for Australian firms to provide a series of submarine components and systems. This initial package covers 23 major items of equipment, including the steering gear system, the weapons handling system, and the main shaft line.
NGA said that more than 2,000 businesses in Australia have now registered their interest with the ICN portal to support the Attack-class submarine programme and the wider supply chain that will sustain the boats over their life of service.
The Attack-class submarine programme features the local construction of 12 boats. Construction of the first of these is expected to start in South Australia in 2024, with launch in 2030 and delivery to the RAN two years later.
