Brazilian technology company IACIT Soluções Tecnológicas, partially owned by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), completed installing its OTH 0100 over-the-horizon coastal surveillance radar system.
The radar, installed at the Albardão Lighthouse in Brazil's state of Rio Grande do Sul, is scheduled to be temporarily utilised by the Brazilian Navy, according to a 13 April letter of intent. A contract could be signed later whereby IACIT will sell the radar service, and not the radar itself, to the navy.
The OTH 0100 is designed to detect and track any ships entering a country's exclusive economic zone (EEZ), even if they have their Automatic Identification System (AIS) transmitters off, Jonas Xavier, new business co-ordinator at IACIT, told Janes.
According to IACIT, the full radar suite principally comprises a solid-state high-frequency (HF) transmission antenna with a frequency range of 3–10 MHz and vertical polarisation; a vertical monopole antenna with a uniform circular arrangement, 148 m in diameter; a 120 kVA power supply system; and container-mounted electronics. A mast-mounted X-band ELTA Systems ELM-2112 high-resolution surveillance radar package provides target detection and tracking.
A towed satellite communications antenna enables the radar suite to be remotely controlled from a land-based command-and-control (C2) centre via the company's VIMTRAH (Vigilancia Integrada Marítima em Tempo Real Além do Horizonte) command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence (C4I) software, which fuses the radar with data collected from various sources.
