Norwegian company Vestdavit has been awarded a contract to supply the davits that will equip the four new Pohjanmaa-class corvettes being procured for the Finnish Navy under its Squadron 2020 corvette programme.
Under the agreement, Vesdavit will supply eight of its high specification telescopic davits – two for each ship.
Announcing the contract on 1 February, Vesdavit said its davits were selected for their high level of reliability and redundancy for the rapid-response launch and recovery of interceptors and other craft in difficult sea conditions.
“Adaptability to work in harsh environments and high sea states, and compliance with shock requirements were an important criteria in winning this major davit award on one of the Finnish Navy's biggest newbuild projects to date,” it said.
Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) was awarded a EUR647.6 million (USD734 million) contract in 2019 to design and build the new Pohjanmaa-class corvettes, with the build to be carried out by RMC's subsidiary RMC Defence Oy. The multi-purpose vessels will be used for a wide range of missions (anti-surface, anti-submarine, anti-air, and mine-laying) and are intended to replace the Finnish Navy's four Rauma-class fast attack craft, two Hämeenmaa-class minelayers, and the decommissioned minelayer Pohjanmaa.
Displacing 3,900 tonnes, and with an overall length of 114 m ships and a 16 beam, the Squadron 2020 vessels will feature an ice-strengthened hull (to the equivalent of 1A class) to enable them to operate in the Baltic year-round.
They will use a combined diesel and electric propulsion system, with Renk supplying the electric drive and gear systems, MAN Energy Solutions supplying 12V 175D diesel engines, and General Electric supplying its LM2500 gas turbines.
