The Russian Navy has moved three large landing ships, five warships, and several vessels of other classes, including one missile boat, to the Sea of Azov under the pretext of participating in exercises, Ukraine's Minister of Defence Oleksii Reznikov stated during a press briefing on 21 February.

In video footage posted by Ukrainian media outlet MyKerch on its VKontakte social media account on 21 February, more than 10 Russian Navy warships could be seen headed towards the Sea of Azov through the Kerch Strait. This included the Ropucha (Project 775)-class landing ships Tsesar Kunikov and Novocherkassk , the Alligator (Project 1171)-class landing ship Saratov , the Bykov (Project 22160)-class corvette Pavel Derzhavin , the Tarantul (Project 12411)-class corvette Neberezhnye Chelny , and the Grisha (Project 1124)-class corvette Eisk .

The latest ship movements follow a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued by Russia on 20 February for the Sea of Azov, closing its airspace from 21 to 26 February for the exercises. MyKerch posted images on 21 February showing that the strait continues to see commercial vessels transiting towards the Sea of Azov, however.

Meanwhile, Russian Navy large-scale exercises in other areas continue. In the Black Sea, the Admiral Grigorovich-class frigate Admiral Essen has conducted an air-defence exercise, the Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) reported on 22 February. Earlier, the Slava-class cruiser Moskva performed artillery firing at combat training ranges in the Black Sea, the MoD reported on 18 February.

Russian media agency TASS reported on 21 February that in the Mediterranean Sea, vessels from Russia's Pacific, Northern, and Black Sea fleets participated in an exercise to hunt foreign submarines. Held under the direction of the navy's Commander-in-Chief, Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov, the exercise, conducted from 15 to 22 February, saw the participation of Russia's major surface combatants, including two Slava-class cruisers, Varyag and Marshal Ustinov , two Udaloy (Project 1155)-class destroyers, Admiral Tributs and Vice-Admiral Kulakov , the Admiral Gorshkov (Project 22350)-class frigate Admiral Kasatonov , and the Admiral Grigorovich (Project 11356M)-class frigate Admiral Grigorovich .

Meanwhile, warships and submarines of the Russian Northern Fleet concluded exercises in the Barents Sea and have returned to their permanent base, the MoD reported on 22 February. The exercises, which began on 15 February, included the Project 22350-class frigate Admiral Gorshkov , the Kirov-class battlecruiser Pyotr Velikiy , the Udaloy-class destroyer Severomorsk, and the Ropucha-class landing ship Aleksandr Otrakovskiy .

The UK Royal Navy's (RN's) Daring (Type 45)-class destroyer HMS Diamond (D 34) has successfully engaged an anti-ship ballistic missile (ASBM) launched by Yemen-based Ansar Allah (commonly known as Houthi) rebels targeting a merchant ship in the Gulf of Aden, the service confirmed on 25 April.

During the incident, which took place around 1151 h local time (Sanaa time) on 24 April, Diamond used its Sea Viper anti-air guided weapon system to shoot down the missile, the navy said. According to a US Central Command (CENTCOM) statement issued on 25 April, the missile was likely targeting the US-flagged, owned, and operated merchant vessel MV Yorktown, which has 18 US and four Greek crew members onboard.

No injuries or damage was sustained by the ship or its crew, CENTCOM said.

by Ridzwan Rahmat

The Australian government has released two more policy documents that outline its defence development intentions over the next few years. The two documents – National Defence Strategy (NDS) 2024 and Integrated Investment Program (IIP) 2024 – were unveiled by Australia's Minister of Defence Richard Marles on 17 April.

The new policies follow Australia's Defence Strategic Review (DSR) – issued in April 2023 – and its evaluation of surface combatant capabilities, which was released earlier in 2024.

As outlined in the IIP 2024, the Australian government is projected to spend AUD765 billion (USD496 billion) in the decade between 2024 and 2034 on defence programmes. This amount includes an additional AUD56 billion above the previous trajectory that was forecast for this period.
