Denmark has placed a follow-on order for 56 Eagle 5 protected patrol vehicles in the 4×4 configuration as well as a prototype of an open reconnaissance variant with General Dynamics European Land Systems – Mowag (GDELS-Mowag), according to a 17 December GDELS-Mowag press release.

The order, which is valued at CHF46 million (USD51.9 million), is the second part of the framework agreement signed between the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation and GDELS-Mowag in June 2017. All 57 vehicles procured under the second order will be delivered from the end of 2021 and throughout 2022, the press release states.

The reconnaissance variant, which is an open-topped version of the standard Eagle 5 already in service with Denmark, will be delivered for tests and user trials, explained Giuseppe Chillari, GDELS Vice President for Wheeled Vehicles and Managing Director of GDELS-Mowag.

Denmark selected the Eagle 5 in 2017 as part of a programme to replace its Eagle 4 fleet, which had as its primary requirements the need for an improved protection package and an increased payload capacity.

The framework agreement covered the delivery of 36 vehicles with options for four different configurations: patrol; electronic warfare (EW); support; and reconnaissance (in both open- and closed-cab versions). This second order, however, includes only patrol variants and the open-cab reconnaissance vehicle.

The first Eagle 5 was delivered to the Danish forces in March 2019 and the entire fleet will be supported by a sustainment contract, also with GDELS-Mowag, which provides through-life support of the vehicles for 15 years.
