French naval shipbuilding, systems, and services prime Naval Group has signed a memorandum of understanding with tech start-up Icarus Swarms to explore the application of ‘drone swarms' for naval use.
Icarus Swarms, part of Dronisos, is a pioneer in the simultaneous and synchronised deployment of multiple (up to 1,000) mini unmanned arial vehicles (UAVs). Having focused on light shows for entertainment events and theme parks, Dronisos now offers Icarus Swarms kits, based on artificial intelligence-based autonomy, using mini-drone swarms for defence, security and para-public missions.

The British and Danish navies have signed a co-operative agreement to work together to bring the UK Royal Navy's (RN) Type 31 Inspiration-class frigates into service.

Naval Group launched UAE's second Gowind corvette, Al Emarat, in Lorient on 13 May. (Naval Group)
French shipbuilder Naval Group has launched the second Gowind 2500 corvette on order for the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The new ship, named Al Emarat, was launched during a ceremony held at Naval Group's shipyard in Lorient on 13 May, the shipbuilder announced on 20 May. The launch follows that of first-in-class Bani Yas six months earlier on 4 December 2021.

The Russian Navy Kilo-class Project 877V diesel-electric submarine (SSK) Alrosa (ex-B 871) is set to start sea trials following the completion of its overhaul and modernisation programme.
In comments to Russian news agency TASS on 16 May, a representative from Sevastopol's military and security authorities confirmed that Alrosa had docked at the Black Sea Fleet's naval base in Sevastopol, Crimea, after departing the service's 13th Ship Repair Plant.
