Indo Pacific 2022: Thales, Ocius Technologies partner to develop unmanned ASW capability for Australia

Thales Australia has entered into a partnership agreement with Ocius Technologies “to advance the development and deployment” of a team of unmanned surface vehicles (USVs), which will have the potential to carry out anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and surveillance missions.

In a media release on 10 May, during the Indo Pacific 2022 exhibition in Sydney, Thales Australia said that this USV capability termed as the ‘Blue Sentry autonomous system' can assist the Australian Defence Force (ADF) by being “deployed from shore to autonomously patrol large areas of Australia's coastline, performing underwater ISR [intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance] missions for long periods of time at sea, and in extreme weather conditions”.

The system's detection capabilities can facilitate covert communication with underwater allies using long-range low-frequency underwater communications, Thales Australia noted.

“Missions that would have previously required the deployment of peopled assets for many days to [be] completed can be conducted remotely” at a reduced cost of coverage using the Blue Sentry autonomous system, Thales Australia added.

Thales secures Combat Net Radio, pursues RoIP solution for SOCOM

Thales USA has secured a multibillion-dollar procurement deal to provide advanced tactical radios, under the US Army's Combat Net Radio (CNR) programme and is developing a manpackable communication solution to meet mobile ad hoc networking (MANET) requirements for US Special Operations Command (SOCOM).

Thales was awarded one of the two USD6 billion indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (ID/IQ) contracts to produce communication platforms for the CNR modernisation effort being spearheaded by army leaders, according to a 16 May company statement. The 10-year ID/IQ deal covers production and delivery of a CNR system based on the AN/PRC-148 Joint Tactical Radio System Enhanced Multiband Inter/Intra Team Radio (IMBITR), company officials said in the statement.

The CNR contract announcement comes after army acquisition officials signed procurement deals with Thales for the company's two-channel AN/PRC-148D Leader Radio and the single-channel AN/PRC-170 Javelin Radio, according to the statement.

The adoption of the AN/PRC-148-based platform into the army's tactical-level command, control, and communications (C3) portfolio will help service leaders transition from the L3Harris-built RT-1523 legacy Single-Channel Ground and Airborne Radio System (SINCGARS).

Gurutvaa Systems delivers ‘Dronaam' C-UAS to Indian Air Force

Indian firm Gurutvaa Systems has delivered the first set of the indigenously developed ‘Dronaam' counter-unmanned aircraft systems (C-UASs) to the Indian Air Force (IAF).

Harshad Dave, director of Gurutvaa Systems, told Janes that an undisclosed number of Dronaam C-UASs were delivered to the IAF earlier in May under a contract signed in August 2021. The system was delivered within nine months.

Dave said the system underwent design review in October 2021 and the first prototype trials were conducted in December 2021. A second trial of a production standard system, which incorporated suggestions from the first trial, was conducted by IAF in February 2022.

Dave further added that the Dronaam system is developed completely indigenously and has proved effective at disrupting the GNSS (global navigation satellite system) navigation and jamming radio frequencies of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

IAI to supply EO/IR for Philippine Navy's patrol vessels

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has secured a contract to supply its MiniPOP electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) systems for the Philippine Navy's patrol vessels, the company announced in a media release on 16 May.

This particular MiniPOP system that is focused on maritime applications has been developed by IAI's Tamam Division, and is “designed to operate during both day and night, and meet harsh environmental conditions such as shock, vibration from waves, and extreme temperatures”, the company said.

“The payload provides real-time imaging, automatic video tracking, and precise target geolocation capabilities that can be used as a standalone EO/IR observation system on small and medium-sized vessels,” IAI added.

IAI declined to provide further details in response to a Janes request for comment on the value of the contract and the number of MiniPOP systems IAI plans to deliver to the Philippines Navy under the contract.
