IT²EC 2024: Babcock unveils new immersive training system

Babcock unveiled a new modular, immersive training system at the International Training Technology Exhibition & Conference (IT²EC) 2024 held from 9 to 11 April in London.

Known as the Babcock Immersive Training Experience (BITE), the system is designed to provide trainees with a realistic training environment in a modular, transportable 20-foot container, Matthew Chuter, the Babcock campaign director for the Collective Training Transformation Programme (CTTP), told Janes and other media representatives at the exhibition.

The system, co-developed by Babcock and BeaverFit, is equipped with audio, visual, and physical effects that can be increased in intensity and adjusted to suit a range of scenarios, placing the trainees in a realistic battlefield environment. The effects and the trainees actions, including their biometric data, are all controlled and monitored in an external control room. Additional containers or different configurations can also be provided depending on the customer's needs.

Indra introduces new vehicle situational awareness system

Indra has developed a new armoured vehicle situational awareness system designed to improve threat detection and evaluation.

Incorporating artificial intelligence (AI), the system analyses images from visible, night-vision, and infrared cameras fitted on the vehicle, improving the range and identification of individuals and platforms as well as reducing the cognitive burden, an announcement from the company detailed on 20 May.

The system also supports friend-or-foe identification and threat-level assessment and can suggest potential countermeasures and courses of action, the company added.

Although its name remains undecided, a company spokesperson informed Janes that it is ready for export and is being installed in the Spanish Army's Tracked Support Vehicle (Vehículo de Apoyo de Cadenas: VAC).

VAC aims to replace around 2,000 vehicles from the M113 tracked armoured personnel carrier (APC) family that are in service with the Spanish Army. Manufacturing is expected to start this year. The vehicles are utilising the same mission systems as the Spanish Army's 8×8 Wheeled Combat Vehicle (Vehículo de Combate sobre Ruedas: VCR) Dragón.

Saab sees NATO future for GlobalEye, despite initial AFSC setback

Saab sees a place for its GlobalEye airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) platform within NATO, despite not being included in the initial Alliance Future Surveillance and Control (iAFSC) announcement in late 2023.

Speaking to reporters at the company's Linköping production facility in southern Sweden, chief marketing officer (CMO) of Surveillance at Saab Fredrik Follin said that the Bombardier Global 6000 business jet-based GlobalEye features in NATO's longer term AFSC plans, despite losing out to its Boeing E-7 Wedgetail rival for iAFSC.

Sweden orders mobile C2 systems from Marshall

The Swedish Armed Forces has contracted UK company Marshall for the provision of a suite of command-and-control (C2) shelters for GBP100 million (USD127.1 million).

Under the contract, the company will be required to deliver up to 500 C2 shelters as well as a range of ancillary equipment, including power units, battery boxes, and mast trailers, along with modular workspaces, the company announced on 22 May.

Deliveries will take place over the next four years, with an option to extend for a further three thereafter.

As part of the contract, Marshall will adapt its standardised 20 ft base container into 16 different C2 shelter variants featuring a combination of equipment, modules, and specifications for roles such as command, communications, mast operation, technical, and network support.

Electromagnetic shielding will be standard across the C2 suite, with most variants featuring HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) and CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear) filtration systems. Ballistic protection is also being provided for one of the variants.
