TKMS hands over first MEKO A-200EN frigate to Egyptian Navy

German shipbuilder Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) has handed over the first of four MEKO A-200EN frigates to the Egyptian Navy.

First-of-class Al-Aziz (F 904) was formally delivered to the Egyptian Navy during a ceremony held in Bremerhaven, Germany, on 14 October. Following the handover, the ship will set sail for its home port in Alexandria in the coming days, TKMS said.

Al-Aziz is one of four ships ordered from TKMS under a contract signed in September 2018.

Under the terms of the contract, the first three units are being built in Germany, while construction of the fourth vessel is taking place at Alexandria Shipyard in Egypt. The contract also covers crew training.

Construction activities for the first ships started in late 2019, and Al-Aziz and second-in-class Al Qahhar (F 905) were laid down in 2020 and launched in August 2021. Al Qahhar is currently on sea trials, a TKMS spokesperson told Janes . Third-in-class Al Qadeer (F 906) was laid down in 2021 and launched in April 2022.

The fourth ship, which has yet to be named, was laid down at Alexandria Shipyard in Egypt in March 2022.

The ships have a full load displacement of 3,700 tonne, a length of 121 m, a top speed of 28 kt, and a standard range of 7,700 n mile at 15 kt, and carry a crew complement of 110.
