by Charles Forrester

Saab has signed several agreements with the UAE’s Tawazun at IDEX 2021 , held in Abu Dhabi from 22–25 February, covering technology development and participation in the country’s human capital development programme.

The main agreements between Saab and Tawazun covered the development of sensor technology in the UAE, supporting research and development (R&D) efforts with the Tawazun Technology and Innovation (TTI) organisation.

Saab and Tamazun also signed an agreement to engage in the Sustain and Enhance Emiratization in Defence and Security (SEEDS) programme, which helps to train Emiratis at a variety of career levels. Other companies participating in the SEEDS programme include Canada’s CAE, France’s Thales and Naval Group, Germany’s Diehl, and US firm Lockheed Martin.

As part of Saab’s presence in the UAE, the company has helped to develop and launch an electro-optical module, the Rugged Camera Module – Infrared (RCAM-IR), which was launched at IDEX. The module is available with different fields-of-view to enable use in roles such as driver vision enhancement systems or situational awareness.

The company has developed a new production line in the UAE for the RCAM-IR module, as well as other support functions including a testing facility, support hub, and localised sales and marketing functions.

The RCAM-IR module is Saab’s first fully UAE-developed product, with the company anticipating more products to be developed within the country covering a variety of Vehicle Electronics sensor systems.
