IAI secures contracts for loitering munitions worth more than USD100 million

by Gabriel Dominguez & Yaakov Lappin

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) announced on 1 February that it has signed contracts worth a total of more than USD100 million for the supply of Rotem and Harop loitering munition systems to several countries, at least two of which are in Asia.

The company said in a statement that a total of three deals were signed recently, including one for the supply of Rotem vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) systems “to a foreign country”, another for the sale of the ship-launched version of the Harop system to a navy in Asia, and a third for the delivery of the ground-launched Harop system to “another customer in Asia”.

No details were provided about the identity of the customers, the number of systems on order, or the delivery schedule. That said, an IAI representative told Janes that all three customers are “new”.

The company described its ship-launched Harop system as an operational solution for a range of vessels aimed at giving fleet commanders the capability to “independently and organically collect intelligence, assess targets, and strike”.

“The intelligence gathered by the Harop system is directly integrated in the vessel’s control room and allows for quick, accurate and lethal decision-making,” said the company, which described the maritime variant of the system as an “alternative and complementary element to using sea-sea missiles, with a wide range of uses and with optimal cost-efficiency for the navy”.
