Germany joins Common Armoured Vehicle System programme, Sweden buys its first vehicles

The FMV has ordered the first 20 troop transport vehicles for the Swedish Armed Forces after signing the technical arrangement for the CAVS programme. (Patria)

Germany formally joined the Finnish-led Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS) programme on 17 April with the signing of the technical arrangement, while the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) ordered the first 20 troop transport vehicles for Sweden after joining the CAVS framework agreement. Germany signed a statement of intent to join CAVS in June 2022.

The Finnish Ministry of Defence (MoD) said in a press release on 17 April that the CAVS framework agreement made it possible for Sweden to order its own vehicles for testing, after which serial procurement would be carried out, including several vehicle types numbering in the hundreds.

An FMV spokesperson told Janes on 20 April that the 20 vehicles ordered by Sweden were pre-serial versions for evaluation by the Swedish Armed Forces before serial vehicles are ordered and production begins.

The FMV said in a press release on 17 April that the first deliveries were planned for the beginning of May, for completion in October. However, the spokesperson said the timeline after that had not been made public, although it could be earlier than the originally planned 2025 depending on adaptations selected by the Swedish Armed Forces. The vehicles will be delivered with a complete training and maintenance package, according to Patria.

The 6×6 vehicle will be designated Pansarterrängbil (Armoured All-Terrain Vehicle) 300 in Swedish service and will have a slightly simpler chassis and subsystems compared with the Pansarterrängbil 360 currently in service with the Swedish Armed Forces.
