French President Emmanuel Macron has ordered his armed forces ministers and chiefs to reassess France's Loi de Programmation Militaire 2019 to 2025 military funding programme in the coming weeks. During his visit to the Eurosatory 2022 exhibition, being held in Paris from 13 to 17 June, Macron announced the reassessment in the new geopolitical context.

Referring to the “unprecedented context” of the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, he said the reassessment would result in “new planning of our work and a long-term, clear, and strong investment by the nation, to be able to accompany these upheavals in the world, to consolidate our entire armed forces model, but also to position ourselves even more strongly on the assessment of both the threat and the realities we are experiencing, both in the Sahel theatre and in this high-intensity war that has returned to European soil ... we will have to organise ourselves durably, that is also [into] an economy in which things must go much faster, we think differently about rhythms, the increase in capacities, the margins, to more quickly reconstitute what is essential for our armed forces, for our allies, or for those we want to help.

“There is no national security, no strategic autonomy, therefore no peace, without land weapons and appropriate funding.

“Everything has changed, not only the state or states that may suffer the consequences, but all the players in the sector, obviously with additional orders.”
