Elbit Systems demonstrated the autonomous mission management capabilities of its Legion-X system at Eurosatory 2022 in Paris.

Legion-X is described by Elbit Systems as an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven, platform embedded system that enables a range of unmanned systems – across the air, land, and sea domains – as well as sensors, to form what company representatives described as a “heterogeneous swarm of unmanned systems” and task them to autonomously undertake a mission.

During the demonstration – which was live-streamed from Israel – a combination of unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) worked in collaboration with ground forces to conduct surveillance of a representative urban area ahead of an assault.

To plan a mission, the operator selects from a choice of mission types, defines the operating area, and assigns unmanned systems to undertake different tasks and roles – again, from a predefined list.

The operator can access an inventory of available unmanned systems that can be selected for the swarm, as well as review the sensors and other subsystems that equip these platforms.

Once the mission is initiated, the Legion-X software automatically plots the routes and approach that the selected systems should take to achieve their tasks.

The operator can exercise varying levels of control over the different aspects of the mission – for example, they can determine no-fly zones, areas in which UGVs should not transit, and set flight altitudes, among others.
