Euronaval 2022: First Spanish S-80 Plus submarine prepares for sea acceptance trials

The Spanish Navy's first new S-80 Plus diesel-electric submarine (SSK) is on track for delivery by mid-2023 as the boat prepares to start its final phase of sea trials in 2023.

Speaking to Janes at Euronaval 2022, Juan de la Cueva, commercial director for shipbuilding, said that following the completion of its surface navigation trials, first-of-class Isaac Peral (S-81) is in dry dock being readied for its first static immersion test, which is scheduled to take place in early 2023.

Sea acceptance tests are expected to be completed by mid-2023, when the boat will be handed over to the Spanish Navy, he said.

Meanwhile, Navantia is continuing its work with Telefónica Tech to develop a reinforced cyber-security system for the S-80-class submarines. This is planned to be incorporated into Isaac Peral in 2023 ahead of its delivery, de la Cueva said.

Isaac Peral is one of four S-80 Plus submarines being built by Navantia for the Spanish Navy under a contract awarded in 2004. Laid down at Navantia's facilities in Cartagena in 2007 and launched in 2021 following multiple delays, Isaac Peral achieved a milestone in May 2022 when it was finally put to sea for the first time.

Meanwhile, construction work on second-in-class Narciso de Monturiol (S-82) is progressing well, and the hull sections are planned to be welded together during 2023, de la Cueva said.

Under current planning, Narciso de Monturiol is expected to be delivered in 2024, Cosme García (S-83) around early 2026, and Mateo García de los Reyes
