Malaysian firm Malvus Sense has showcased new vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aircraft systems (UASs) that it is producing in collaboration with Chinese UAS firm Jouav for the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF).

The new systems – including the long-endurance CW-40D and multi-purpose CW-100DA – were displayed at the Defence Services Asia (DSA) 2022 in Kuala Lumpur, which concludes on 31 March.

A representative from Malvus Sense said the Malaysian company and Jouav have been developing the two UASs, which both feature four rotors and one propeller, for the past two years. The representative added that the partnership plans to trial the systems soon to build on its already strong profile within the MAF.

According to Malvus Sense, the CW-40D UAS can fly at a maximum speed of 150 km/h with an endurance of up to 10 hours. It can reach a maximum altitude of 4,000 m, and has a communication range of 200 km. The UAS, which is 2.3 m long with a wingspan of 4.6 m, can be fitted with a range of electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) sensors.

The CW-100DA UAS is designed for multi-purpose intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions, said Malvus Sense. Similar in appearance to the CW-40D, the CW-100DA features four gyrostabilised gimbals for a range of EO/IR sensors. It has an operational ceiling of 4,000 m and a maximum speed of 130 km/h.

In addition to these products, Malvus Sense disclosed to Janes that it has provided the MAF with several Jouav-designed VTOL systems. The company official said, “Malvus Sense is now the biggest supplier of VTOL UAS to the Malaysian Ministry of Defence.”
