The German Navy has decommissioned its final Bremen (Type 122)-class frigate.

FGS Lübeck (F 214), the eighth ship of the Bremen class, was officially retired from service during a ceremony held at Wilhelmshaven Naval Base on 15 December. Lübeck completed its final deployment on 16 June 2022.

With its decommissioning, the chapter of the Bremen class, which began with the keel-laying of first-of-class FGS Bremen in 1979, closes.

Commissioned between 1982 and 1990, the eight Bremen-class frigates were based on the Royal Netherlands Navy's Kortenaer-class design but using a different propulsion system and hangar layout. Their main capability was anti-submarine warfare. They were progressively removed from service from 2012 to 2022 to be replaced by four Baden-Württemberg (Type 125)-class frigates, which entered service from 2019 to 2022. The Baden-Württemberg-class units are orientated towards stabilisation missions and can remain in their respective area of operations for an extended period.
