Biden signs defence funding increase into law
US President Joe Biden signed into law on 15 March the fiscal year (FY) 2022 omnibus appropriations bill, which includes USD782 billion for defence, up 5.6% from FY 2021.
The legislation, which the House and Senate approved last week, provides a total of USD1.5 trillion for the federal government, including non-defence agencies. It follows a series of temporary funding measures that Congress had passed to keep the government running since FY 2022 began more than five months ago.
The new law will give the Pentagon a bigger pot of money for weapon system acquisition programmes. It includes a total of USD264.1 billion for procurement and research and development, up USD19.6 billion from the Biden administration's request, and up USD20.5 billion from the FY 2021 enacted level.
Attached to the omnibus is a supplemental appropriations package that will provide USD13.6 billion in Ukraine-related security, humanitarian, and economic assistance. “We're moving urgently to further augment our support for the brave people of Ukraine as they defend their country,” the White House said.
