Covid-19: US Navy looks to accelerate future work as virus threatens current production

The US Navy wants to accelerate new contract awards as the impacts of Covid-19 threaten to disrupt naval production and other existing programme work, James Geurts, the assistant navy secretary for Research, Development and Acquisition, told reporters on 25 March.

Geurts’ comments come as the USN’s largest shipbuilder – Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) – reports more coronavirus cases in its shipyards.

“We are not slowing down what we planned to award and when we plan to award [contracts],” Geurts said. “We’re actually accelerating that wherever we can, so we can get that demand signal in. As the situation allows, and folks get back to work at full speed, there [will be] meaningful work for them.”
