A US Navy (USN) P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) was allegedly lased by a People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) destroyer near Guam on 17 February.
The incident took place above international waters approximately 380 miles (611 km) west of the island, according to a statement from the USN's US Pacific Fleet Public Affairs department on 27 February.
The service has also identified the offending PLAN vessel as "Destroyer 161", which refers to the 7,500-tonne Luyang III (Type 052D)-class guided-missile destroyer, Hohhot . The vessel was commissioned by the PLAN in January 2019.
"The P-8A was operating in international airspace in accordance with international rules and regulations," the USN statement said "The PRC navy destroyer's actions were unsafe and unprofessional."
