The Brazilian Navy inaugurated its new Antarctic station Estação Antártica Comandante Ferraz (EACF) on 15 January.
The facility at King George Island, in the Keller Peninsula, was built by China National Electronic Imports and Exports Corporation (CEIEC) to replace the original EACF. A 25 February 2012 fire destroyed 70% of the infrastructure of the original EACF, based in the same general location as its successor.
Despite the fire, EACF operations have continued during the construction of the new EACF.
The 4,500 sq m station is essentially composed of laboratories, communications and meteorological modules, power generation equipment, and a living area for 64, as well as medical, healthcare, catering, and technical areas.
