The US Navy (USN) is embarking on a major recapitalisation of its offensive mining portfolio to deny freedom of movement to adversary forces in a future high-end conflict.
Speaking at the Surface Navy Association annual symposium on 16 January, Captain Danielle George, Mine Warfare Program Manager (PMS 495) in the Program Executive Office Unmanned and Small Combatants, said that as well as upgrades to air-launched Quickstrike mines, the modernisation plan includes the introduction of the Mk 68 Clandestine Delivered Mine (CDM), and development of a new encapsulated mine system known as Hammerhead.
Naval mines are deployed to establish and maintain control of essential sea areas.
