The re-emergence of power competition is presenting the US Navy (USN) with its hardest challenge, according to Vice Admiral Richard Brown, commander of the US Naval Surface Forces and commander of the Naval Surface Force, US Pacific Fleet.
“The most difficult challenge we face is great power competition is back,” Vice Adm Brown said on 14 January during a presentation at the Navy Surface Association 2020 National Symposium.
“When I joined the navy in 1985, we were in the middle of the Cold War,” he added. That was great power competition. We got underway ... in battle-group formations. Full hard rudders. 30 kt.”
