US national security, intelligence, and armed forces sectors must forge stronger ties with counterparts in the private sector, including with a more diverse group of suppliers beyond traditional defence contractors, the Pentagon’s top technology official said.
“If you look back at the history of the Department of Defense [DoD], you could say at one point, we were the curators of technology, we were the innovators. But over time, what evolved was a very large, robust defence industrial base,” Pentagon Chief Information Officer Dana Deasy said.
“We are going to have to lean heavier and heavier on a much broader commercial base [and] that means changes for us, inside the Department of Defense,” he said during the 2019 Atlantic Future Forum on 22 November.
