The Royal Netherlands Navy will send the frigate HNLMS De Ruyter to participate in the French-led maritime surveillance mission in the Gulf, the Dutch Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed on 29 November.
The Dutch ANP news agency reported on 25 November that the Netherlands would join the mission for a six-month period from January but the deployment was only approved by the cabinet four days later, according to the MoD.
It said the frigate would join the European-led Mission Awareness in the Strait of Hormuz (EMASOH) from the end of January to the end of June with the aim of monitoring the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding waters to help de-escalate tensions.
