Malaysia's parliament unanimously approved the country's first Defence White Paper (DWP) on 2 December, outlining the strategic outlook for the next 10 years.

Tabling the document, which has yet to be released to the public, Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu said the White Paper was drafted to involve the public and other stakeholders in defence issues as well as to reflect on how the strategic outlook of the country is evolving due to regional issues.

Referring to the latter, Mohamad stated that one of the key issues is the current tension between China and the United States. "The two countries' relations have entered into a new phase that is more likely to be competitive than of mutual tolerance," he said.
