Russia’s Western Military District (WMD) received 780 armoured vehicles in 2019, the Russian Ministry of Defence reported on its website on 18 November.
This included 35 upgraded BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) with modernised fire-control systems, 10 BMP-3 IFVs and BTR-80 armoured personnel carriers, 40 T-72B3M tanks, and for the first time, GAZ-3344 articulated all-terrain vehicles, according to the report.
The WMD also received ShSRM-30 trucks for its railway troops.
The deliveries increased the proportion of modern hardware in service with the WMD to some 63%.
The WMD’s air component has been reinforced by 17 fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft since the beginning of the year. “Under the State Defence Order [Gosoboronzakaz], troops have received 10 brand new fixed-wing aerial platforms, including six Sukhoi Su-35 4++ generation multirole combat aircraft,” the WMD’s press department announced on 18 November.
