India and Bangladesh have agreed to enhance military co-operation, including a commitment to accelerate the procurement of India-manufactured defence equipment.

In a joint statement on 5 October Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged to “expedite work towards drawing upon a USD500 million Defence Line of Credit extended by India to Bangladesh, for which implementation arrangements have been finalised in April 2019”.

Hasina and Modi also signed a memorandum of understanding to install a coastal surveillance radar system in Bangladesh as the two countries seek to develop a closer maritime security relationship.

No further information is available from official sources on the timescale for deployment or the exact type of radar, but Bangladesh has no coastal surveillance system in place.
