Romania’s Ministry of Defence plans to invest RON12 billion (nearly EUR2.8 billion) in the reconstruction of the Romanian Air Force’s (RoAF’s) 57th Air Base to bring it fully in line with NATO standards and increase its capacity, local media reported in late September.
The 20-year project will be funded by the state budget. Once completed, the airbase, the military part of Mihail Kogălniceanu International Airport 13 km from the Black Sea, will have a new runway, hangars, aircraft repair facilities, fuel storage, a firing range, administrative buildings, and a mini-city for the 8,000-10,000 troops it will reportedly be able to host.
