Russia is assisting China in the development of a missile warning system, according to comments made by Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Valdai Discussion Club, a Moscow-based think-tank, in Sochi on 3 October.
The Russian leader said the system is intended to “enhance the defensive capacity of the People’s Republic of China”, pointing out that “currently only the United States and Russia have such systems”.
The remarks were reported by Russian and Western news outlets, but there appears to have been little coverage in Chinese media.
President Putin’s comments gave no indication of the scope of the co-operation, such as the technology that may be shared or which components of a missile warning system China would benefit in receiving from Russia.
