US military steps up combat operations in Afghanistan

07 October 2019

The United States military has intensified combat operations against militant groups in Afghanistan following the collapse of peace negotiations between Washington and the Taliban on 7 September.

“We did step up our attacks on the Taliban since the talks broke down. You know, the [US] President [Donald Trump] spoke about this publicly. We did pick up the pace considerably,” US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper told reporters on 5 October.

“The president did want us to pick up in response to … the heinous attacks that the Taliban and others conducted throughout Afghanistan,” including in Kabul, he added.

Esper declined to provide details about the intensification of US military actions in the Central Asian country, but said they have included “air and ground” operations, adding that the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) have led operations on the ground.
