Oregon-based FLIR Systems has acquired tethered drone assets and related intellectual property (IP) from Aria Insights, a Massachusetts company that ceased operations in March, FLIR announced on 2 October.

Aria, formerly CyPhy Works, developed the Persistent Aerial Reconnaissance and Communications (PARC) tethered drone, which can carry a wide range of payloads, including cameras, communications gear, and environmental sensors.

Tethered drones connect to a base station or vehicle by a microfilament wire that provides communications and power. Their ability to perform long missions gives them an advantage over free-flying unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) in certain situations, according to FLIR.
