US Army seeks new SIGINT solutions for high-altitude, low Earth orbit operations

The US Army’s Intelligence and Information Warfare Directorate (I2WD) is seeking next-generation high-altitude, low Earth orbiting sensor platforms for offensive and defensive operations.

Specifically, army engineers want “advanced concepts and capabilities” for signals intelligence (SIGINT)-based sensor systems, that can be fielded aboard manned or unmanned high-altitude fixed-wing aircraft, stratospheric balloons, and on low Earth orbit satellites, a 2 October request for information (RfI) said.

Army officials in the I2WD directorate have budgeted for development of three individual units of the selected SIGINT sensor package, with plans to develop the selected platform from the basic prototype phase to a technology readiness level of 7, the RfI said.
