02 October 2019

Draft federal budget documents for the period 2020-22 indicate that Russia plans to spend RUR3.10 trillion (USD47.55 billion) on defence in 2020, with further increases to RUR3.24 trillion in 2021 and RUR3.30 trillion in 2022.

This would equate to 2.4% of Russian GDP in 2020, 2.7% in 2021, and 2.6% in 2022, the TASS news agency reported on 1 October.

The draft budget for 2019-2021, which was released in July 2018, described defence spending of RUB2.86 trillion in 2020 and RUB2.98 trillion in 2021. The figures in the latest document are therefore 8.4% higher for 2020 and 8.7% higher for 2021.
