Malaysia to issue Defence White Paper in December

02 October 2019

The Malaysian government is to present its first 10-year Defence White Paper (DWP) to parliament in December 2019, national news agency Bernama confirmed on 1 October.

The government is due to announce its budget for 2020 on 11 October. Cabinet ministers will then discuss the DWP before it is formally presented to the lower house (Dewan Rakyat).

The 10-year planning document replaces the National Defence Policy that the government launched in 2010.

Preparations for the DWP included discussions with defence ministries in other countries including Australia, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. The white paper will include a broad range of defence-related issues, including strategic doctrine, staffing levels, future force requirements, and equipment spending and procurement until 2030.
