Rheinmetall is developing a total ship training concept using networked simulators, and showcased the idea at DSEI 2019 in London in September.
Florian Zimmer, Rheinmetall international sales manager for maritime and process solutions, told Jane's that while much naval individual and team training is conducted using simulators, there was little use of simulation when training the whole ship. This is currently conducted on board, either alongside or at sea, and can be expensive.
Zimmer said Rheinmetall was examining ways of moving onboard training ashore to make greater use of existing simulation facilities, observing that total ship training could reduce the overall use of platforms for training purposes from 70% to 30%, with consequent savings in cost and improvements in operational availability.
