China and Uruguay are strengthening their defence relationships under an agreement signed in Montevideo by the defence ministers of the two countries.

The agreement, signed on 2 September, calls for the establishment of a framework for future co-operation and a specific Chinese commitment to donate a naval vessel to Uruguay.

The agreement framework establishes the general conditions for both countries to co-operate for defence operations, including training, exercises, investigation, science and technology, humanitarian assistance, fighting terrorism, and transfers of matériel.

The Chinese vessel to be donated to Uruguay is worth about CNY30,000,000 (USD4.2 million). Although the vessel type was not disclosed at the time of the agreement signature, sources familiar with the donation told Jane's it will probably be a Type 053 frigate from the batch decommissioned last July (Type 053H1 Jianghu II).
