Admiral Gilday takes over as USN CNO

Admiral Mike Gilday relieved Admiral John Richardson as the 32nd Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), the most senior officer in the US Navy (USN) on 22 August.

A seasoned surface warfare officer (SWO), Adm Gilday most recently served as the director of the Joint Staff. The Lowell, Massachusetts, native is a graduate of the US Naval Academy and holds master’s degrees from the Harvard Kennedy School and the National War College.

As an SWO, he had deployed with guided-missile destroyer USS Chandler (DDG 996) and guided-missile cruisers USS Princeton (CG 59) and USS Gettysburg (CG 64). He commanded destroyers USS Higgins (DDG 76) and USS Benfold (DDG 65) and later commanded Destroyer Squadron 7, serving as sea combat commander for the Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group.
