A US military MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was lost over Yemen’s Dhamar governorate late on 20 August, two US officials told Reuters on the following day.
One official said it appeared that the UAV was hit by a surface-to-air missile (SAM) launched by the Iranian-backed Yemeni rebel group Ansar Allah (the Houthis), but the second said it was too early to tell what was responsible.
“We are investigating reports of an attack by Iranian-backed Houthis forces on a US unmanned aerial system operating in authorised airspace over Yemen,” US Central Command (CENTCOM) spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Earl Brown said in a statement.
