Taiwan's Executive Yuan has approved a national defence budget of TWD411.3 billion (USD13.1 billion) for 2020. The new budget - announced amid rising tension with mainland China - represents a 5.2% increase over defence spending in 2019.
The Ministry of National Defence (MND) said on 15 August that the 2020 defence expenditure comprises the "official budget" of TWD358 billion and TWD53.3 billion in "special funds". Both allocations are record highs.
The MND also said that the new allocation accounts for 2.26% of national GDP. The defence budget still needs approval from the Legislative Yuan, but this is considered likely given the ruling Democratic Progressive Party's control of parliament.
