Philippines reveals space technology ambitions

14 August 2019

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has signed into law new legislation intended to support the development of space-related science and technologies over the coming decade.

The Philippine Space Act was enacted on 8 August but announced by the government on 13 August. The legislation is positioned to boost the Philippines' capabilities in both defence and commercial domains.

Under the new legislation - called Republic Act 11363 - the government will establish a Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) and draw up a Philippine Space Policy. PhilSA will be recognised as an executive agency.

According to the government, the space policy will outline a "coherent and unified strategy for space development" intended to enable the Philippines to "keep up with other nations in terms of space science and technology".
