The US Navy (USN) should provide Congress with an independent cost estimate for the service’s proposed new guided-missile frigate (FFG[X]) before awarding the detail design-and-construction contract for the ship and also seek ship warranty-cost information from industry as part of the request for proposal for the vessel, the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) said in a report released 9 August.
While the Pentagon generally concurred with the GAO’s recommendations, the Defense Department did not agree to update its request for proposal to solicit ship warranty pricing, the GAO noted in the report.
However, the GAO reported it “continues to believe this is an essential element of the recommendation”.
