Russia builds new island helicopter base in Gulf of Finland

12 August 2019

Russian engineers have built a new helicopter base on Moscow's most westerly Baltic island, Gogland, in the Gulf of Finland, TV Zvezda military news and other Russian media quoted the Western Military District (WMD) press service as saying on 7 August.

The facility consists of five helipads, a command-and-control post, refuelling points and a maintenance centre.

The 21 km 2 Gogland is 55 km from the Estonian coast and 40 km from the Finnish coast and will handle all types of transport and combat helicopters operated by the WMD.
