The Guatemalan Ministry of Defence (MoD) has announced the acquisition of a logistics support vessel for its navy – a BAL-C vessel (Bote de Apoyo Logistico y Cabotaje) manufactured by Colombia’s state-run company Corporación de Ciencia y Tecnología para el Desarrollo de la Industria Naval (COTECMAR).
The vessel is the first ship of its class that the Guatemalan Navy has acquired.
It will be utilised to deliver humanitarian assistance, carry out search-and-rescue operations, and combat transnational maritime crimes in Guatemala’s Pacific waters, the MoD said in a release earlier this month.
BAL-C vessels have a length of 49 m and a maximum speed of 8.5 kt.
