The Saudi Ministry of Defence released a statement on 20 July saying that King Salman had approved the deployment of US forces “to raise the level of joint action in defence of the region’s security and stability”.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed on the same day that Saudi Arabia had invited the United States to deploy troops and resources to the kingdom.

“This movement of forces provides an additional deterrent and ensures our ability to defend our forces and interests in the region from emergent, credible threats,” it said. “[It] creates improvement of operational depth and logistical networks.”

Neither statement provided further details of the number of troops involved or the equipment they will bring.
