The United States is preparing to deploy a Patriot battery and 500 troops to Saudi Arabia’s Prince Sultan Air Base, according to two US officials cited by CNN on 17 July.
The US military withdrew most of its personnel from the kingdom in 2003, leaving only those involved in training and supporting Saudi forces.
The officials told CNN that a small number of US personnel are already at Prince Sultan to prepare for the Patriot deployment as well as runway and airfield improvements. The base is southeast of Al-Kharj, a location the officials said would be difficult for Iranian missiles to reach.
