The New Zealand government has undertaken a commitment to review and invest in upgrading defence facilities, it was announced on 11 July.

Defence Minister Ron Mark said the country's defence estate, which encompasses a total land area of 81,000 ha, "is at a crossroads; much of it is run down and outdated. It needs to be improved in order to gain, train, and retain our service people, now and into the future."

Mark said that a new plan to "regenerate" defence facilities has been approved by the government and will result in "an increase in the indicative funding required from NZD1.7 billion (USD1.1 billion) to NZD2.1 billion to 2030".
