Romania selects Naval Group bid for multi-mission corvette programme

08 July 2019

France’s Naval Group has won Romania’s much-delayed multi-mission corvette programme after bidding a variant of its Gowind 2500 design in partnership with the Santierul Naval Constanta S.A. (SNC) shipyard.

Defence minister Gabriel Leş on 3 July confirmed Naval Group as the preferred bidder ahead of rival bids from Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding of the Netherlands and Italy’s Fincantieri. The decision came almost six months after the tender process was suspended pending investigations into irregularities during the procurement process.

Romania’s requirement calls for a 2,500-tonne class multipurpose ship with capabilities across anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, anti-air warfare, electronic warfare, naval gunfire support, and search and rescue.
